Frequently asked question — research us to find a list of answers to typical questions that users and friends of Costa Academy might ask.

What is Jiu Jitsu?
Jiu Jitsu is a Martial Art and a Combat Sport that focuses on ground fighting techniques and leverage to control and “submit” opponents through joint manipulations and chokeholds.

Jiu Jitsu is highly regarded as the best martial arts for self defence due to its effectiveness on bigger and stronger opponents.
What are the main health benefits of Jiu Jitsu?
. Self Defence - Learn effective skills to protect yourself in a real life altercation.

. Weight Loss - In a normal training session, most if not all of your muscles will be activated making it a very effective way to get the muscles active and stronger in turn helping to shred the extra weight.

. Stress Relief - On top of the health benefits that a normal physical activity will give you, Jiu Jitsu acts as a stress relief in the sense that when you are in training you have to be fully immerse and concentrated on the task at hand to be able to put the skills you have learned into practice. The concentration necessary and the intensity of the work out will keep you engaged and focused on that specific task generally giving you relief from any other problems or stress you might be experiencing.

. Problem Solving - Commonly referred to as a game of Human Chess. Jiu Jitsu will improve your problem solving and troubleshooting skills as you will need to adapt and overcome problems and different scenarios as it happens on the spot helping you evolve mentally as well as physically. Very translatable skill to life outside of the mats.

. Confidence - Jiu Jitsu is one of the only martial arts in which you can practice with real intensity. The ability to apply techniques to fully resisting opponents is what separates Jiu Jitsu from other martial arts giving yourself real confidence for whatever comes your way.

. Community - Join a community of individuals from all walks of life creating life long bonds and friendship while helping each other improve mentally and physically.

Gi and NoGi, what is the difference?
. The main difference is just the uniform, in Gi you wear a Kimono with a belt and NoGi is just shorts and a rash guard. Some small differences in what techniques are taught, how the strategy is played out and minor differences in rules.
What is the focus of Costa Academy, Gi or NoGi?
. We pride ourselves in doing both. We have a balanced mix between Gi and NoGi.
Is competition necessary to excel in Jiu Jitsu?
. Competition is a very useful tool to help with your Jiu Jitsu journey but it is definitely not necessary. If your goal is to compete there is a competition team that dedicates fully to competitions but most of our students are non competitors trying to better themselves through martial arts.
How do I progress through the belt rankings? Is there a cost to be graded?
. At Costa Academy we perform gradings based on merit and not on time. Gradings never cost anything, when you have done enough you will be graded at an official academy grading or by surprise at a class.
